No problem. Não se prendam por mim. Eu adoraria estar aí para participar, mas realmente não tenho como ir antes.
Let me know what you guys decide.
Beijo, beijo!

Hey everybody, I'll be going to Brasilia for X-mas, on Dec. 19 - 27. I would love to meet with people there. Any mini-reunions planned for that time of the year? Perhaps a pre-Christmas get together...??? :-)
Let's give it a try! It would be great.
Beijos to all. :-)

Ms. Norwood, Please tell Pete I said hi! I "held hands" with her in fifth or sixth grade, it was sweet. I hope you all are well. My wife Tricia and I now have two girls, Margarita is 3, and Ella is 9 months. We are thrilled with the girls and mad that someone out there didn't warn us we're too old for this - some lady asked Margarita if she brought her "grandaddy" to dance class with her!!

Hello Ms. Norwood! Please tell Pete I said hi. We saw Val Berry's brother, Todd at the reunion this year. I remember that Val and Pete were inseparable at EAB. Regards to the rest of the family. Marc! You get the best joke of the year award! Florida, the plywood state! That was hilarious! Um abracao pra todos!

How fun to find your Guestbook and all the info on EAB. I am the mother of Kelly, Lori, Mark and Amy Norwood, EAB 74 to 77. Would be happy to get anyone in touch with them and them with you.
I enjoyed the news of your reunion and the picture. Sorry we didn't know about it. Maybe next time. My best to all EABers, especially those who were there from 74 to 77.

Hi David. We haven't seen you (or your brother) on the Guestbook in ages. I hope all is well. I lived in Texas (10 yrs in Dallas)from '81-'04 when my current employer managed to entice me into moving to the "Plywood State" aka Florida. It's ok, but it's not Texas.
You missed a terrific reunion in July. Maybe next time you can join the gradually increasing ranks of the old timers attending.

CHURRASCO DO EAB ALUMNI

Cool site Mikkel. If it's powered by the same satellite imaging as Google maps, then only major cities around the world will have the close up detail on the maps. If you choose the hybrid view and move the map around, you can actually find EAB. The images are a little dated, it looks like the performing arts center was being built at the time they were taken. You can easily make out the gym and soccer field. Cool.

Philippe, I remember Hassana very well and I am surprised tnat you don't. She was one of the most popular girls in school at that time, no wonder she made it to the top and has got all that money to share with the biggest son of EAB. She had a younger broder, Hassan, don't remember exactly which class he was in, but he will probably be the one you will have to deal with later on.
Just do as she tells you and don't forget about the fellow alumni once you put your hands on all that money. Grana, fama e você. Fama você já tem, grana é por conta da Hassana, e você é por conta de você.
Ask Niro if he knows her. ;-)

Does anybody remember Hassana Baki, class of 1977? I got this email:
"You may be surprised to receive this mail from me since you probably do not remember, I got your contact through the eab alumni page.
I am Hassana Baki Abdulahi, class of 77, the wife of late general abdulahi Hamza, who was the military attachee to South Africa during the regime of the general Sani Abacha, on the 21st of April 1998, my husband who was very close with general Abacha was given $US15, 000,000,000, but unfortunately, president Sani Abacha died before the general election. The money was given to my late husband to be used for some powerful African leaders to support Abacha in case of any external disruption."
She wants to give me half. I'll even donate a new computer for the Alumni. Sounds like a good deal to me...

Carlos,
Silvia Cançado Center of Arts was named after a former EAB student who passed away soon after her graduation. Check the following article froma a local newspaper:
U.S. Ambassador to Brazil John Danilovich, together with Senator Paulo Octavio, Headmaster John Gates and other members of the board of the American School of Brasília (EAB), innaugurated the Silvia Cançado Center for the Arts at EAB Friday evening. EAB – the only school in Brasília with U.S. accreditation – constructed the center this year, with funding coming from contributions made by parents. The center is named after Silvia Cançado, a student who was tragically killed in a road accident just days after graduating EAB. The state-of-the-art facility, featuring 400 seats in an acoustically balanced auditorium with classrooms, catering and reception facilities, provides students with a first-class performing venue, and offers companies and performing arts groups in Brasília with a welcome mid-sized venue for shows and events. In comments to students, parents, faculty and board members following the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, Ambassador Danilovich praised the combined efforts of parents that had resulted in the building of such a “truly impressive” facility, and added the Embassy’s best wishes for the success of the project. “We are part of the EAB community, and the EAB is very much part of the Embassy community. It is my hope that this new center will become an active hub of cultural activity for all of us here in Brasília.” he said.

George Bush's Dream
One night, George W. Bush is tossing restlessly in his White House bed.
He awakens to see George Washington standing by his bed.
Bush asks him, "George, what's the best thing I can do to help the country?"
"Set an honest and honorable example, just as I did," Washington advises, and then fades away.
The next night, Bush is astir again and sees the ghost of Thomas Jefferson moving through the darkened bedroom.
Bush calls out, "Tom, please! What is the best thing I can do to help the country?"
"Respect the Constitution, as I did," Jefferson advises and dims from sight.
The third night, sleep is still not in the cards for Bush. He awakens to see the ghost of FDR hovering over his bed.
Bush whispers, "Franklin, What is the best thing I can do to help the country?"
"Help the less fortunate, just as I did," FDR replies and fades into the mist.
Bush isn't sleeping well the fourth night when he sees another figure moving in the shadows. It is the ghost of Abraham Lincoln.
Bush pleads, "Abe, what is the best thing I can do right now to help the country?"
Lincoln replies, "Go see a play."

Guess what came out on Yahoo.com today? - "Scientists Dispute Hurricane Blaster Idea" - According to the article the federal government had a hurricane "modification" program that was called Project Stormfury. During Eisenhower administration the idea was proposed after several storms lashed the East Coast in the mid-1950s. Interesting: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050923/ap_on_sc/rita_wishful_thinking

Relax Dave, nobody is trying to "politicize the tragedy". These storms have to start somewhere. I was just curious. Nip it in the bud. You see, last night there was a freak storm in Brasilia (its dry season) which rattled the whole house. It put some light (though the lights went out for a few hours) on the frightening ammount of power a category 5 must pack. And we are talking about a very solid brick and mortar house. Maybe the government should subsidize rebuilding prone areas with brick... That could help, at least on the property side... I am sure Katrina helped the people in the path of Rita realize how serious these storms are. (Dave, there is no hidden agenda here... you have to believe me...)

Philippe, I hope that your question was rhetorical and you weren’t expecting an answer. But just in case you did, here is why we can’t just blast a hurricane out of existence. "Even smaller hurricanes pack a mind-boggling amount of power. The heat energy released by a hurricane equals 50 to 200 trillion watts—or about the same amount of energy released by exploding a 10-megaton nuclear bomb every 20 minutes".* Courtesy of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. * Now I’m guessing that the quote here is for a 1-3 category storm, not a 4 or 5. I understand how someone would want to find a way to prevent these devastating natural occurrences, but to politicize the tragedy by throwing WMD references in your statement then cloaking your politics with other advances in technology is pretty sad. Let’s hope that this time people heed the warnings and get out in advance of the storm.
David Esquivel
Plentywood MT USA - Thursday, 22 September 2005, 3:22 pm
People... Food for thought here. I was wondering... can´t we get a pile of WMD, find a way to avoid the nuclear fallout and blast the eye of these monster storms before they reach land? Think about it. Could the incalculable human loss and billion dollar property damage be avoided by strategically placing hundreds of warheads in the right spot to blast these storms before they become to large? We grew up listening that we have had the "technology" for some time now to blow up the world several times over (not literally of course, but by fallout), so why not use it for some good. Come on, we put a man on the moon and managed to fabricate low carb beer. There must be a way. Is there any lit on this on the internet? Thoughts anyone?

Eu estou por fora de outros lugares aqui em Bsb, mas aceito qualquer lugar que tenha um clima legal, e não seja abarrotado, que nem o Libanus. Mal deu pra escutar as pessoas falarem naquele dia.

Just to change the mood, a little remark... a book came out recently in Brasil, called "Apenas uma garotinha". It´s the biography of Brasilian singer Cássia Eller, who died of heart failure in December of 2001.
The cool thing is that former EAB music teacher Curtis Tipton is mentioned in the book. Yes, Mr. Tipton played bass in Cássia Eller´s very first music group, a band called "Malas & Bagagens", way back in 1982. On page 76 of the biography, Mr. Tipton is mentioned as "an American who played bass and taught music class at Escola Americana de Brasília".
And I thought the man from Tennessee was only into country music! Dearest Mr. Tipton, wherever you are, god bless.

Sounds good, Alex, me and Flavia are in. How'bout 'The Dubliner' at the Phoenix Park on Cap. Hill? Lots of EAB'ers around here....
On Katrina,I agree, it's really sad to turn on your TV and see Americans go without water to drink and food to eat for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 days....This president, this Republican Congress, and this Federal Government have failed the American people once again. The moronic FEMA director had no idea of what was going on inside the Superdome. UNBELIEVABLE!!! The response in Trikit, Iraq averages 12 hours max...
But of course, now the Karl Rove spin machine is putting the blame on the mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisianna, both Democrats, mind you, sparing the Republicans completely, forgetting they cut the FEMA budget to 40 million a year (when they funded a bridge in Alaska from somewhere to nowhere for 450 million dollars, not to mention the 7 billion dollars/month in Iraq). It's sickening...What happened to: "The Buck Stops Here?" No accountability, they'll do anything to protect Bush...
My favorite was Barbara Bush saying that " those underprivilleged are better off here in the Astrodome anyway..." These people live in another world. They are so out of sync with our reality (but totally in sync with theirs!)
Anyway, yeah, let's get together soon, DC gang!

After days and days of utter sadness over the tragedy that has befallen the Gulf Coast, I decided to take a look at the pictures of the most recent mini-(micro?)reunion to distract myself. It is amazing how the smiles of some far away friends can brighten my day. I then went back and reviewed some of the pictures from the reunion. Once again, the faces, smiles, and grins provided a solace that is indescribable. Thank you all. I also now have reunion envy and would like to try and get all of the Washington, D.C. Elisabeth, I live in Rio for 15 years now (since I left Brasília, in 1990) and I raise my 9 year old daughter here. The city has violence, just as any other big cities, and you have to be aware as to where to go here, but it's not AS terrifying as people say it is. The movie, "City of God" portraits how the violence in the "favelas" began in Rio, back in the 60's, when the drug dealers in the favelas began do compete for power and for the areas that they controlled. The story is based on true facts, and it was directed by Fernando Meirelles (Brazilian director). The story begins in the 60's and moves on to the present time. It is very interesting from a social point of view, and very well filmed & directed. However, you should not be afraid to visit Rio. It is also a very beautiful city, with great beaches, and wonderful people. Tourism is great here, and everyone (that I know of) that came here with the impression that they would be in constant fear and threat, got over that impression and enjoyed the city very much. In these 15 years I've lived here, nothing has ever happened to me or my family. Just be cautious about certain hours you chose to go out (at night) and know where to go, and that's it. No different from NY, Madrid or London... Except for the lovely beaches, wonderful nature, great night life, good restaurants and beautiful people!
I hope I helped.... :-)

I've heard a few people at work talking about a movie called "City of God." Apparently it's about Rio and it's violent. Everyone thinks it's really good here. They said the movie is in Portuguese with sub titles. Does anyone know anything about it? Was it made by a Brasilian? If you've seen it, how close is it to what Rio is really like?
Also, I loved your reunion photos Paul!
